Otomi embroidery originates from central Mexico. From Tenango de Doria, in the state of Hidalgo. Traditionally, embroidery used to be an exclusive women's activity. They reproduce colourful patterns inspired by nature: scenes full of flowers, butterflies, birds and other animals emblematic of Mexico.

Nowadays, embroidery is an inclusive activity in which everyone can participate, regardless of gender and age. 

Tenangos are traditionally multi-coloured, but can also be found in single colours for more sobriety and elegance.
