We are a Belgian-Mexican family that believes in the value of handmade creations.
We realize that more and more customers are turning away from the culture of the industrial chain/intensive-disposable consumption. Discerning consumers are looking for better, fairer and more sustainable living solutions.
We believe that singularity, sustainability, fairness and respect for a well done job are important values that can profoundly transform a community. Fair-trade and top quality are therefore main priorities in the selection process of every creation we offer to our customers.
Happily, the magical impact of Fair-trade is particularly happening in Yucatán, in southeast Mexico.
Our hammock partner in Mexico, Cielo Hamacas, is a social organisation that provides the unique Fair-trade certified hammocks in the world. Like Azul Maya in Belgium, they are social impact entrepreneurs who recognise the incredible economic disparity in Mexico and the world. They are a Fair-trade federation member and lead a group of organisations whose aim is to foster social change by fighting poverty and promoting gender equality.
They organise hammock weaving around ~900 Mayan families from indigenous communities in the Chumayel and Teabo region of Yucatán (+/- 25 km from Mérida, the capital). They provide materials, logistics, entrepreneurial guidance and quality control.
In this way, they enable these families, who hand weave hammocks from their homes, to generate a stable source of income in their own community.
A brilliant mission that shares the quality of Mayan hammock weaving with the world, preserving ancient Mayan customs, history and traditions.
Today, this work has a direct impact on over 3,000 people. In addition, they work with the community, local government, academic institutions and NGOs to amplify this positive impact by promoting education as a catalyst to break out of the cycle of poverty. Our partnership with the Cielo Foundation has the ambition to become a global beacon on how to do business to promote social development.
